Fisherton Anger Gaol 1861

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone might be able to tell me what my ancestor was in Fisherton Anger Gaol, Wiltshire for,  on the 1861 census, or point me in the right direction to finding out.

His name was Charles Gray, and he was born in 1818

Sorry, we need a bit more information 

1861 has his place as Downton, was he in Downton in 1851 and married to Louisa
HO107 / 1846 f194 p28

Newspaper reports have a Charles Gray charged with Manslaughter in July 1858.  You should be able to see these on FindMyPast or the BNA website

That sounds a bit ominous.

Charles is listed at Fisherton Anger Gaol, in Wiltshire on the 1861 census. He was married to Louisa Moody, and the family where from Redlynch, Wiltshire.

He was an Agricultural Labourer, by occupation, if that helps.

He seems to have been in trouble a few times
1858 as Rosie said for manslaughter date of trial 17 July 1858 14 days
1859 date of trial 10/3/1859 larceny ..Acquittal
1861 date of trial 15/10/1861 Larceny before convicted of felony 6 months

I cannot see any result of that court case. 

There is another newspaper report about Charles Gray of Downton in Hampshire Advertiser 09 August 1862 which refers to him as an 'old offender' and mentions assaulting his wife Louisa. 

You really need to access newspapers for the area to see if there is any further mention of him.

That's all it says on the England and Wales Criminal Registers
As you said Newspapers would be the best option

This seems to have thrown up more than I bargained for. I think accessing the Newspaper archive is my next step as you have suggested.

I also use the Scottish Library website, link is below. You can get a good idea using the old  OS maps of what an area was like, or in this instance where the prison was.

As pointed out, I think I will have to consult the newspaper archive to further what information there is on Charles.
