Mary Dooley and Edward McMahon-possibly Dundalk
« on: Wednesday 06 November 19 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Edward and Mary would be my great-great- grandparents ( parents to James who later moved to Belfast). I think they met and married in Dundalk but can find no other information for them
Anything would be greatly appreciate
We are planning to visit Ireland next year with Belfast and Dundalk on our itinerary
I am so excited as I now have Irish citizenship though I am retired to France from UK via New Zealand

An idea of a date would help.
Religion if you know it.

I see from your other thread that James married in 1885 full age so he was born c 1864, so if his parents were RC they won't have a marriage cert, do you know how many children the parent's had and if James was the eldest or not.

James' marriage was RC

All the details in the above post are in the earlier thread that Sinann posted a link to earlier. Here's the link to it in case you've overlooked it, dathai  ;)

The 1898 marriage for son James lists father Edward McMahon as deceased. James' 1885 marriage says father Edward was alive-

Therefore, it's a matter of searching for Edward's death 1885-1898.

An Edward McMahon, age 63, , married, died 1893 Drogheda but occupation is grocer & publican-

An Edward McMahon, labourer, married, died Armagh in 1895 (age slightly off?)-

An Edward McMahon, age 54, labourer, married, died 1887 Monaghan district-

Perhaps just a co-incidence but there's a James McMahon, parents same names, died 1942 Chicago, Illinois. Birthdate listed as 11 Aug.1871 Co. Monaghan and occupation stationary engineer-

However, Family Search also brings up a James McMahon born 25 Aug.1870 Co. Louth-

Birth certificate gives father Edward as farmer-

Thank you for all those replies. I'm feeling quite confused possibly because there were so many McMahons ( sometimes written as M'Mahon) in Monaghan

It does look as if Lavinia and James parted for a while, she to her father and he to family in Clones.

I can't begin to imagine the pain they must have experienced with so much loss. James had already been widowed when his first wife Julia was only 26.

According to James and Julia's ( nee Brown) marriage certificate of 1885 Edward is shown as alive and working as a labourer.
