Boar and Crimean war
« on: Thursday 07 November 19 12:29 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching my family for absolute donkeys years, I have been told this week by a second cousin that my grandfather born 1869 and married 1886 was in one of these wars

I know nothing at all about this info and am surprised  that after 23 years of researching told my grandfather fought in one of these wars, it has never been mentioned within the family before and considering my grandfather fathered at least 13 children I wonder why it hasn't been spoken about before to me, those who are left know I have researched the family, wondered if she meant my Gt grandfather, both of these men were at home for every census

Are there many records showing who fought in either of these wars please

Crimea War was in the 1850s so that leaves the Boer Wars... these were in Africa ...  Google is your friend.  Spell Boer with 'e'  not 'a' .

You have not mentioned what country your Grandfather was  born in, in 1869.  Several British colonies raised volunteers and sent them to South Africa to support the British in those Boer Wars.

Hello louisa, the Crimean war was over with a good while before his birth which leaves the Boer war
1899-1902,if you have him in the 1901 Census may rule him out also.could be you may be looking at
Gt Grandfather,a name might help for those with access to the records.

Hi Louisa Maud,ASC is Army service corps an R prefix means Remounts which came under control of
the ASC in 1891,this basically the purchase and training of horses for the British army.Hopefully someone
with a Knowledge of army numbers might be able to give an enlistment date as most numbers can be tied
into a particular year.any horse related occupations for your ancestors?Could possibly have served with the
territorial army hence being at home in census.
The remount depot for the ASC was in woolwich.

Hi Stevie, this is a great bit of info.
I suppose this does fall into place, my grandfather did have horses, I will look at occupations on births and baptisms but this is a great bit of news, why I wonder did no one else know about it in the family except a cousin who unfortunately died this year aged 99.5 years, I can't help thinking we should pass on as much as we can to our families before we depart this life
I am hoping someone else might come up with a bit more information

Totally agree Louisa Maud, happily I can pass a good deal of info onto family member's in the future thanks
to a lot of year's research,we had a similar situation with my Grandfather, his WW1 service was a total
mystery he never talked to my dad about it at all even though Dad served in WW2 and his brother was
killed in 1940 no mention at all, thanks to fellow roots chatter's I queried the absent voters list for the
nearest address for him I had for 1920 and they came up trumps so I now no he served from 1915 to
1919,which regiment and where the war took him.
We,ll see if anything more is forthcoming then if you like we can
throw the army number over to the folk on the Great War Forum, even if it falls pre-war there are some
real detectives over there who like a good challenge.

I Googled ASC and it came up with what I can only call a poster,
needed man accustomed to horses, duration of war 25-40 years
pay 9/11-11/8 per week all found, also gave the amounts pad for wives and children,

I can't see a way of copying it so if you are interested you might find it on good old Google
