Edward PHILLIPS, born 1830, Bath, Somerset
« on: Thursday 07 November 19 13:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

The 1841 England Census indicates Edward PHILLIPS was an inmate of the Bath City Gaol.   He was later in 1847 transported to Australia.

Family Tree Sources confirm his date of birth as 17/03/1830 and that his father was Edmund PHILLIPS.  The 1841 Census enumerates Edmund PHILLIPS with wife Rebecca (nee FISHER) and 6 children (no Edward), quoting him as age 35.    He married Rebecca FISHER according to Somerset, England, Marriage Registers, Bonds and Allegations, 1754-1914 on 29/08/1819, making him 13 at the time.    Methinks something is amiss!!!

Suggestions, observations etc. would be more than welcome.

Hi

Just a quick observation regarding the 1841 census. Ages were supposedly rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5, so Edmund may have been 39ish, so maybe a bit older.

Burial at Bathwick of Edmund Phillips of Grove Street, 17 June 1842 , age 38, born 1804....making him 15 when he married!

Claire and djm297,

Between your observations a feasible argument for the family structure being correct is emerging.   Interestingly the 1851 Census shows an "Edmund" addition to the family, born in 1842.   I quite favour Claire's 5 year multiple!!

Thank you both.

Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette 06 January 1842 mentions an Edward Phillip 20 & Wm Phillip 24 being charged with stealing.  It does mention that there was a long catalogue of offences since 1837 of Edward and that it would be utterly useless to pass any further sentences in Bath Gaol and that he (and William)_ should be transported for 7 years.  This is quite a long article available to view on FindMyPast /BNA.  I have not read much of it.

Just for information this article mentions Dover Street so probably this Edward

Edward Phillips
Baptism 13 Jan 1822
Residence   No 4 Dover Street
Walcot, Somerset
Father James mother Elizabeth

Ignore this, see next post

There are several reports in newspapers around 1841 of a little boy age 10/11 called Edward Phillips who was stealing which would tie in with the 1841 in Bath Gaol

Hello rosie99,

I had noticed that article about Edward and William PHILLIPS in FindMyPast but put it to one side as (1) the ages were too high and (2) William did not appear a member of the family.

The other articles confirming Edward's age as 10/11 have been copied, especially that confirming his transportation.

Thank you for the posts.
