Help find my ancestors
« on: Monday 11 November 19 00:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Just starting off finding my ancestors and don’t know much. All I know is they originate from Wicklow, Ireland possibly in Bray. I can trace them back to my great grandfather Patrick Salmon who passed on 4th Jan 1984 and my great grandmother Alice Salon who passed on 23rd August 1966. I have found a gentleman by the name of Cornelius Salmon who married Mary Salon in 1904 but unsure if there is a connection. I am aware that there are still some ancestors living in Bray but wanted to go further back to understand my family tree. Any help would be appreciated

Welcome to Rootschat

Were both deaths in Wicklow?

You don’t say how old Patrick and Alice were when they died.  If they were born before 1911 you can look for them on the 1911 census which is free here

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Depending when he was born here is a possible entry for Patrick

Thanks for the quick reply

Yea both deaths where in Wicklow

I am trying to find more about Patrick’s parents, I am unsure if his father was Cornelius as I am unsure as to when Patrick Salmon was born I only know of his death, my nan who is still alive does not really disclose much information on her family history

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

In order to follow your direct line with confidence it's essential to gather up all official certs. from beyond what you know e.g. birth records which will give the mothers' maiden names/fathers' occs. & marriages which give fathers' names/occs/witnesses to enable you to work back.

There's no point in assuming who your ancestors are as it's a pointless task with no proof.

Welcome to the world of research  ;D

Alice was 51 in 1966?

So born about 1915
Birth Should be showing in Irish civil records, but I do not see it

Do you have the marriage certificate? (I am assuming Patrick and Alice were husband and wife, and not two separate lines of ascent?)

This is usually a sign (not always) of something amiss i.e. all the more reason to obtain earlier official certs.

Alice Salmon nee Coughlin died 29 Aug 1966 Graystones, wife of Patrick, late of Golden Cashel Co. Tipperary, 1 Strand Cottage.
Redford Cemetary.

That should help find their marriage.
