OPR Holyrood and Canongate
« on: Wednesday 13 November 19 01:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello, new to the forum, and I need guidance.  My parents emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1952 and my very Canadian granddaughters are interested in my roots!  My 2nd great grandfather Alexander McDonald b. 1846 Edinburgh married Jessie Scott in Tradeston, Burgh of Glasgow on 24 Jun 1870.  His parents on the marriage record are John McDonald and Ann Hastie m. 29 May 1843, OPC Gorbals.  John and Ann had 8 children, Alexander 1846, Margaret 1848, Mary 1849, John 1850, Peter 1854, Charles and James twins, 1856 and Ann 1857.  The last three children were born in Edinburgh and the twins were born at 3 Richmond Place.  I cannot find any Census records in Edinburgh for John McDonald family but there are 1851 and 1861 census records in Newcastle on Tyne which seem to match.  I cannot find the birth records for the first five children, of course, I am mainly interested in Alexander.  I am open to suggestions,  thanks!

Yes Girl Guide, that is my Alexander, and in every census his birthplace is Edinburgh.  I would like to find his actual birth record.  I thought it would be Holyrood Canongate since the children after 1855 are registered there but no luck.  And yes Chempat I do have the 1851 and 1861 England Census and this could be the family as John had a brother Charles who is listed on the Census.  As far as the twins go, I am wondering what happen to them since they are not on the 1861 Census and no death record.  Also is there some way to search the Census in Edinburgh 1861 to find where the twins were born 3 Richmond Place?  I thought it might be family.  And finally was it common practice for Scots living and working in Newcastle to register births in Scotland?  I am using Scotland’s People extensively as the actual records may have little clues not found on Ancestry and FamilySearch.   Thank you for your replies.

Thanks djct59.  I downloaded the record but do not think it is my Alex, our family were staunch Protestants in those times.  The mother is Ann Hastie and father John MacDonald, sponsors were Alex MacDonald and Elizabeth MacDonald.  On the same page John MacDonald is the Clergy for some of the baptisms.  None of the other missing births are on the RC registers either.  Will look into it further just in case.
