Greetings.  Trying to confirm that John Patrick Flanagan is the first Flanagan to come to Colonial America in my tree.  In the 1870 or 1880 US Census Philip F. states that his father,  Philip F. came with his parents to North Carolina on the Great Wagon Trail. Makes me think the family travel from  Pennsylvania. I'm running out of patience looking for 5x great grandfather.      Thanks.

Do you mean that John Patrick is the father of Phillip who is the father of Phillip who is in the 1870 or 1880 US Census?

Here's what I have found on John Patrick Flanagan on Ancestry.com that gives this info- 1745 to 1807, born in Offaly, Ireland, died in Marion Co., Kenturky.

John Patrick Flanagan, 1745, is in more than 100 trees on Ancestry. 
Have you approached any of the tree owners for confirmation of their research?

Some of them do have sources, and possible parents for him.

Have you checked the actual census images to see what they do say? The census is unlikely to say they came to North Carolina on the Great Wagon Trail.

The second Philip F told the US census taker that his father, Philip told him that his family traveled on the Great Wagon trail.
