Long shot - Joseph Hicklin
« on: Friday 15 November 19 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all. (mod please move if I've put in wrong place!)

I am not too helpful of anyone being able to help me, but here goes.

The part of my family tree I am struggling with most is my paternal side - namely my great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Hicklin.

I am looking for his baptism record in order to further the family tree, and have come up against a wall.

I have all but one of his census records, his parish baptism certificate, his marriage certificate, death certificate and even newspaper clippings, but the details don't seem to match up, and so I can't be certain of who his parents are.

What I have
Married - 19th August 1849 at Shenstone, Staffordshire. Age 22 (b.1827). Father Joseph (only concrete mention of a parent name I have)
1851 census - States born at Abbots Bromley, Warwickshire. Age 23 (b. 1829)
1861 census - States born at Hillwood, Warwickshire. Age 33 (b. 1828)
1871 census - States born at Little Hay, Warwickshire. Age 45 (b.1826)
1881 census - States born at Hillwood, Staffordshire. Age 53 (b. 1828)
1891 census - States born at Lichfield, Staffordshire. Age 65 (b. 1826)
1901 census - States born at Staffordshire. Age 75 (b. 1826)
1911 census - States born at Lichfield, Staffordshire. Age 85 (b. 1826)
Diamond wedding anniversary (19th August 1909) newspaper clipping - States he will be 84 next March (b. March 1826)
Died - 5th October 1916 at Kiveton Park, Yorkshire. Age 90 (b.1826)
Obituary - States he was born at Lichfield and just turned 90 in March 1916 (b. March 1826)

All of the records above are 100% him, yet offer so many differing details!

Sadly, I can't find his 1841 census record either - he would have been 12 or 13.

He was clearly born between 1826 and 1829, in Staffordshire or Warwickshire area.

However, no matter how hard I look I can't find any baptism record for a Joseph Hicklin (or Hickling is it was often spelled) for that time.

The only record that comes close is a Joseph Hickling in the 1841 census (b. 1829) resident in Tatenhill, but his father is John, not Joseph as stated on Joseph Jnr's wedding certificate. Also, Tatenhill is some distance from the locations mentioned in the census records above.

Help!

I think you can definitely count out Tatenhill man. Here's his baptism - and he can be found on later censuses

Joseph Hicklin
Baptism    19 Apr 1829  Saint Michael, Tatenhill,
Father:    John Hicklin
Mother:    Hannah

Joseph Hicklin jnr. married Mary Howdle (Howdall), and was a labourer at the time, as was his father Joseph snr.

I can't quite make out the names of the witnesses - George Lakin (Larkin? Parkin?) and Elizabeth ...

Yes that's right, he is also on several other census records if I can remember rightly.

The Joseph, Comberton found, is transcribed as Joseph Hickler 12 on Ancestry.
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

How about this?

Baptism
18 Feb 1828
Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire
Joseph COTTERILL
Mother:  Elizabeth COTTERILL

Elizabeth gets married the same day and place,

Marriage
18 Feb 1828
Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire
Joseph HICKLING
Elizabeth COTTERILL

Maybe Joseph COTTERILL was the son of Joseph HICKLING or perhaps he just took him on as his own.

Unfortunately I can't see any images to see if there is more information, maybe someone else will have access to them.

Regards,
Daisy

The images are on FindMyPast
The baptism only adds ‘base son of’
The marriage is by banns
Both of this parish
Joseph made X, Elizabeth signed as Cottrel
Witnesses Richard Horobin made X & William Eason signed
William Eason witnessed several marriages on the next few pages before and after
John Neale Curate on both ceremonies
