Was my 3rd great grandfather a gypsy?
« on: Saturday 16 November 19 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello All!

Need some advise.. my 3rd great grandfather was James Hennessey born in 1838 in Redruth Cornwall. (I only know this through census, i cant find a birth Cert)

On his daughters wedding cert his occupation is ‘traveller’

I have hit a brick wall with trying to find his parents and go further back, but to no avail.

Could he have been a gypsy?

Thanks in advance  ;D

Hi
The marriage is at Plymouth Mar qtr 1860 James Hennesey and Elizabeth Mary Harrison
I can't see a transcription on line.
There seems to be two Hennessey couples in Redruth c 1841 Thomas and Roxanna and Joseph  and Hephizibah both stone ,masons .
A possible birth for James Redruth as James Henstey /Hensley mother mdn name Thomas Mar qtr 1838.

Hi
The latter censuses say he is a pedler or hawker of Hardware.
Presumably pots and pans.

1861 5 George St Tormoham Gas fitter
1871 Kenwyn Calewick St Hawker
1881 60 High St Wellington  Arms Ilfracombe pedler
1891 2 Cross St Penzance hawker
He's on the 1911 as hawker of  holloware

Thank you all ever so much for your help and speedy reply!

I must confess I did order the birth cert for james redruth ‘henstey / hensley’ and the mothers name is Catherine Thomas.

On James (Redruth’s) wedding cert he has his fathers name as James Hennessey also but is ‘deceased’.

I cant seem to find a census for James In 1841 or a 1851 to confirm if his mother and father are the above?
