Albert Edward Williams WW1
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 21:57 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the WW1 Memorial at Denbury, Devon. We have one man Albert Edward Williams whom we are unable to identify or link directly to a service record, he was born in Denbury. Any suggestions on how to progress would be most welcome.

In 1911 Albert Edward Williams born Denbury 1878 is a Chief Clerk living in Torquay with his wife and two children.
Looking at the Commonwealth War Graves site, he does not seem to be entered as a casualty, although there are a couple of his name for whom details such as age or family are not available. Given his civilian occupation and age I'd have expected him to be used in an administrative capacity in one of the support Corps, rather than as a front line infantryman, but given the peculiarities of the Army at that time, who knows ?.
I'll keep looking.

Thank you all, yes you have identified the right chap. He worked for Torquay Corporation as Chief Clerk (Electrical Department) but we are unable to 'prove' his WW1 service - we know all about him, spouse, children, place of residence, the fact his wife was 'noted' as a widow after the WW1 - in between a blank. I have even checked Torquay's memorial for him. Thank you all for your speedy response.

Are there any church records you could check to see if he is mentioned in them around the WW1 period?

Found any reference to him in any local papers?

Sometimes local papers made mention of local men who were killed or wounded in WW1.

Any local archives that may bear fruit?

You may want to look at the records for Whittington Hospital. Wikipedia has the following information :

First World War

In 1918 the New West Annexe (St Margaret's) was commandeered for the treatment of war casualties: patients who died during treatment were buried in the institution's private cemetery at the northern edge of the site. The hospital was returned to civilian use the following year following the cessation of hostilities.

If the information that the hospital annexe was returned to civilian use in 1919 is correct then perhaps Mr. Williams was retained as a psychiatric patient after that date ?
