Would you be willing to give his name?

You can apply for his service record from the MOD:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records
Cost is £30.

The cap badge looks like a Sphinx, could be the Lincolnshires, or possibly, the Gloucester Regiment ? Though more likely the first.( ! )

I googled the Lincolnshire Regiment and on Wikipedia it said that they spent time in defence of England.  One battalion suffered heavy losses in September 1943 when they landed in Italy.  I wonder if that could be what he was talking about.
I say this as my fathers battalion was landed on Java and he always said that one company were sent out and no one survived.  I recently found that a few did.  Time can change memories.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Clare you can only get proper details by applying for his service record as Ruskie advises.  That will give which of the 8 battalion of the Lincolns he served with and when from which the service of that/those unit(s) can be determined.  Apart from 1st Battalion which was in the Far East, the others all spent considerable time in UK (as did much of the arm) so the events could have been in almost any of them.

You don't need his service number or his regiment.
