Have you searched our PapersPast on line service. The Blewitt surname has been around Auckland for quite a while, though in a quick look I did not spot any with G G as initials. There was about 150 hits, when the research was restricted to post 1900, and to the Auckland region newspapers.

However on our National Archives search index, there are files held at the Auckland branch that I could photograph on my next visit. They are titled LAND VALUATION FILES and are about transfer of land titles, where the one party was Gabriel BLEWITT, in 1946, and again in 1948.

Thanks again Alan I will have a look and check those out. The ‘George’ name seems to have been added at some stage so the references I have seen have both. His birth was just registered here as Gabriel.

He is definitely the right one connected to me.  I have found them sailing on the S S Jervis Bay 30 August 1938 to Freemantle from Southampton onward to New Zealand to  Dennis, Favona Road Otahuhn.

The Dennis family are Norman and Dorothy nee’ Blewitt Gabriel’s sister
If you wouldn’t mind copying those land details I would be much appreciated. No rush though.

My dad was a seagull watersider,He would go off early on Saturday morning with his grapling hook wrapped in brown paper as a lot of the cargo was bales etc (no containers in those days) and work usually just the morning.This supplemented his weekly wage at his fulltime place of employment.

Gabriel and Edna Blewitt left Southhampton on the 30th July 1938,the UK address they gave was 18 West Park Rd Southampton.They were contracted to land in Sydney his occupation was cook hers was housewife.
Interesting that it also says Country of last permanent residence NZ (residence is understood to be for a year or more)Country of future permanent residence is also NZ.
There is also a shipping list for the TSS Largs Bay leaving London on the 25th August 1925.Gabriel is on his own and the UK address given was 67 St John's Road,Cudworth,nr Barnsley.occupation is given as miner and port contracted to land is Freemantle.Last country of permanent residence is England,intended country of future residence is Australia.
