William Calder
« on: Sunday 24 November 19 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Born 8 Oct 1737. Durness. Charity Schoolmaster. Documented as died in 1829 in Strathhalladale at an advanced age after a few days illness. He was a prominent person in Sutherland. Married first to Janet MacKay, then to Grizel Ross.  Why can’t I find his death? Can anyone help please.

Where are you looking?

1829 is too early for a death registration in Scotland, where civil registration started in 1855.

Scottish burial records are very incomplete. Official estimates are that for a third of parishes, none survive:

Is this him? Birth details differ:

William Calder was a native of Ardclaeh, Nairnshire, and came to Strathnaver about the year 1786 as a teacher in the service of the Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge. His school was, during the days of my childhood, at the place of Rhiloisk, a pendicle on the east bank of the Naver, about four miles from Achness.......

Just posting in case you may not have seen.

Corresponding birth or christening entry for him:

Parents: JOHN CALDER/ELS MC GRIGOR
11/10/1737
120/10 45
Ardclach, Nairn
