Search Births by mothers name
« on: Tuesday 26 November 19 13:18 GMT (UK) »
How can I search for birth records by the mothers name, is this possible? The births would be in Scotland  in the 1960s if that makes a difference.
Also, if a child was adopted, would that still allow the birth record to be found or would it be hidden?

Welcome to Rootschat! However this is not a site for tracing births in the 1960's as the person could still be alive. FreeBMD is a place to look up Births Marriages and Deaths, but I have not ever used this for Scotland, but I imagine it works much the same. I believe it goes up to about 1983. Adoptions are another matter, and much harder to trace depending on how much information you already have. You could get in touch with the local council of where the child was born as they would be able to point you in the right direction. You would I believe need to be a close relative of the person you are trying to find though.
Regards.

Welcome to rootschat

Scottish BMD is only available on Scotlands people website but you cannot trace a birth by only searching for the mothers name.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Scotlandspeople goes up to 2019, but does not show mother's maiden name until you apply for the certificate, and restrictions are in place.

Thanks All.
I am trying to trace a possible half brother of my husband, with his permission. He is not so computer literate,  ;D
I will follow up on the adoption link, see if that helps, but without a name I cannot search BMD. I have tried on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk with no luck.

My husband doesn't even know who his father is, as his birth certificate is blank, so I can't even try that angle.

Will keep probing, maybe something will turn up eventually. We have his DNA in the system so hopefully we will one day get a match that will help.
