McGowans in Dooyork
« on: Tuesday 26 November 19 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am looking for information on McGowan families from NW Mayo - particularly where Patrick McGowan (b 1871 on Dooyork) came from, no sign of the family in earlier census data.

Any related information appreciated,
Martin.

Are these your McGowans in the 1901 and 1911 census?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Rathill/Dooyork/707690/

Patrick appears to have been born around 1871, but I can't find a birth record for him yet.

KG,

Yes they are, I had found the census records but hey seem to dissappear before that, I know the earlier census records were a bit patchy but no mention of the name in any of them, I am wondering if they migrated in from say Ballycroy where ther are more McGowans.

This is the only Patrick McGowan born between 1868 and 1874 in Belmullet and Newport RD's.
His birth.....9th August 1873.
The townland is Aughness which is only a few kilometres from Dooyork, but across a body of water.

Unfortunately you will not find your ancestors in earlier censuses.

The original Irish census returns for 1861 and 1871 were destroyed shortly after the censuses were taken.

Those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped during the First World War, probably because of the paper shortage.

The returns for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were, apart from a few survivals, notably for a few counties for 1821 and 1831, destroyed in 1922 in the fire at the Public Record Office at the beginning of the Civil War.

KG,  This does make some sense, in 1901 he was living with his father in law, by 1911 he has his own place in Dooyork - so could have relocated following his marriage.  Also I do have DNA matches to the Cafferkey name in the Area which again would correlate with his Mother being Honor Cafferkey.  I'll have a look through DNA trees to try and prove the genetic link.

Many thanks,
Martin.

I see there is a Marriage of Bernard McGowan and Honor Cafferkey in Aughness in 1866 - do you think this is likely to be the same person as Bryan Cafferkey listed as the father of the potential Patrick - are these names interchangable ?
