1901 census Hereford General Hospital, Park Street
« on: Tuesday 26 November 19 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm tracing the history of a CLARKE family who have a child (Rose Clarke, aged 6 ) in the 1901 Census in the "Hereford General Hospital" on Park Street as a patient.

I have little knowledge of Hereford so I'm hoping someone can tell me if the Hospital on Park Street was a Free Hospital or a workhouse infirmary? Is there any trace of it now.

Thank you far any help anyone can provide

Thank you, that confirms that the Workhouse was somewhere else so Rose CLARKE may have been in a Free Hospital.

Excellent, thank you, a fascinating history and good photos.

My only confusion is that the 1901 Census lists it in Park Street adjacent to number 117 which seems to be a long way from the General Hospital.

The enumators route went from 117 Park St to the Hospital Lodge then the Hospital.  It doesn't  have to be next door https://maps.nls.uk/view/120896620#zoom=6&lat=3867&lon=9453&layers=BT

It does not show as being in Park Street on the census return.   The enumerators page at the beginning mentions the infirmary at the end of the area he covers - the reference for that page is RG13/2481 f71

Rosie99, Kay99,

Thank you, all explained. I did look at the enumerators page but made a false assumption that the hospital did at least have an entrance on Park Street.

Thanks again
