Thanks for this link and extra names. I wonder if the first wife died on arrival in Australia and John married Martha and had more children.

I have just seen two entries for a John Rafferty and Sarah Young marriage on Scotland’s People. 1874 and 1878. I have not opened them yet as I have no credits at the moment.  I will digest what I have before I spend any money. Meanwhile thanks for your help. I need to shut down for the moment and get on with other things which are not as enjoyable as family research.

Hi Jamjar

Thanks for the cemetery link.  I am beginning to think this is a different family.  The information on John I am hoping to find was buried in Townsville Cemetery on 8th April 1919.

Thanks.
Betty

Charters T and Townsville are not far apart. He could have been paying a visit to the big smoke, separated, or working there. It is likely they are the correct couple. Whether he is the John who arrived on that ship with Sarah is another question.

I can’t see anything else on him in the papers. The only way to find out more will be purchasing his death cert, I think.

I’m thinking that the John who arrived on the ship may have come from Hawick. Not to far from Dumfries.

See marriage notice for Maggie in 1887, 1st column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article65744277

1887 C1665 Margaret Rafferty to Thomas Dale

1888 C10250 Alfred Dale parents Thomas and Margaret Rafferty died 1963 C4423 Alfred

1891 C10311 Margaret May Dale Thomas and Margaret Rafferty

I think the Dale’s may have gone to England, 1st column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article53849836

Gertrude death: 1965 C6057 Gertrude Dale parents John James Guigell and Annie

Thanks jamjar for all your help.
Without seeing the death certificate for John who died in 1919 I can’t be sure it is the John I am looking for but the entry does indicate his parents as John Rafferty and Agnes Cardy which are the parents I would be looking for.  John senior died in Edinburgh and Agnes in England.

The death of a Sarah Rafferty in 1894 would fit with other dates.

I think future research requires spending some money.  One to get the marriage in Scotland and two to get the death. The death might be more informative.

Thanks again
Betty

Wish i had seen this post a few days ago, im originally from the Towers and only got back 2 days ago having spent 3 weeks there visiting the kids. Townsville and the Towers are very close to each other with about a one hour drive between them. Alligator creek [mentioned in the article below] is slightly south of Townsville.

Anyway found this

The Northern Miner (Charters Towers, Qld. : 1874 - 1954)
Sat 12 Apr 1919
RAFFERTY.—At Alligator Creek, on April 7th, 1919, John Rafferty, beloved husband of M. Rafferty, aged 69.—R.I.P.

Sorry just seen this notice has already been posted, sorry Matthew
