Herman Minster d1846 Gort
« on: Saturday 30 November 19 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I am researching my husbands Ancestor Herman Minster or Munster born around 1779 in Fulda Germany.
He joined the 20th Dragoons during the Napoleonic Wars and we have traced him, by his army records, to his death on 2nd March 1846 at Gort Galway Ireland.

Can anyone tell me if there are any burial records for Gort around that period. Where would they be and is there access to them? Is there an 1841 Census for that area?

This is another post trying to find his Baptism in Germany.

Any help gratefully received.

I am unable to find anything about his wife Barbara, His son Robert baptised1806 Maidstone or daughter Charlotte baptised Limerick 1817.

Does anyone know if there are any records for this area around the 1840's/1850's?

Thank you.

What denomination was Herman ?

Catholic churches often did not keep burial records, do difficult to find where burials took place. There might be church of of Ireland burials, but it doesnt look like RootsIreland records for the parish go back far enough.

most of the 1841 census does not survive, none for any parts of Co. Galway that I see

Charlotte was baptised in St. Marys Church of Ireland in the city of Limerick. Church of Ireland baptisms didnt include mother's surname

Thank you for the replies. I don't know what denomination he was.

I am having great difficulties with the Irish records but it looks like I am because there aren't any.

I have Charlotte's Baptism but then nothing.   :'(

Their other daughter, Elizabeth, was baptised Palermo, Sicily in 1813. She had children to her 'husband' Kingston Bedford starting in  1834 at Chesham Buckinghamshire. I can only take a guess how she got there - maybe in service ??? We also can't find a marriage. She died in Chesham in 1857 after having 14 children.

since he was in the army the marriage could have been anywhere Herman served, I would think finding that would be the best bet for establishing Barbara's surname.

There may be no family connection to Gort, there was a cavalry barracks in the town so it could just have been somewhere Herman was based at the time he left the army ?

It's not looking good for Kilmacduagh/Gort church of Ireland records, so the only other option might be if someone put up a headstone for him

Thanks again for replying. Always good to have different points of view.
Have got a marriage in Maidstone Kent 12th Nov 1806 to Barbara Aberdein. He was based there at the time.
However I can't find out anything about her either. Son Robert born in December 1806.

He is from Fulda Germany. He was discharged from the Army in 1818 in Galway. His Army pension says he died at Gort 1846.

from the details I saw  the 20th Dragoons were disbanded in 1818

Here are a few Munster entries in the Tithe records of agricultural property 1830s, but no Herman, and he just missed Griffith's valuation which might have shown where he lived.

I am wondering what he was doing in Gort.

His discharge papers show that he was given marching money to take his family from Cahir Barracks to Dublin in 1818. By 1845 his pension was being paid at Ennis. What took him there?
