Australian connection?
« on: Saturday 30 November 19 20:51 GMT (UK) »
I have some pretty compelling evidence that my ancestors stepped ashore with the first fleet in Australia. They weren't convicts, but moreover a marine sergeant & his wife. They returned to Britain after nearly 4 years in the colony, shortly after having a daughter, from whom I'm a descendant.

My question is simply, would an Ancestry DNA test possibly, reveal/confirm this relatively brief stay with that early colony?

My initial answer , given no NPE , is no. Attending a country confers no  DNA

If the sergeant played away or the wife did then possibly . But that also requires the ''other party'' staying and having children in Australia as well

Do you have unaccounted matches in Australia?

………….No, I haven't done a test yet, but I was wondering if such a test would reveal a link, to back up my research.

To be fair, I think I should have been a bit clearer, in advising that the evidence I have is not DNA based, but just good old research  :-[

Ahh thank you

Then the answer is similar if I have understood

Your sergeant and wife travelled as part of the official party , had a daughter born here, then returned to England and continued on with their lives there. You are descended from that daughter

Again apologies if I have crossed wires but look at it this way - if you and your wife live in the US for 5 years and have a child and return home then that child is still English by descent- the child may legally acquire documentation stating dual citizenship - but that is the accident of birthplace

If no other movement occurs then that childs descendants wont carry any US DNA -

………….. I thought as much, thankyou David.

I sort of thought that the locally grown/reared food they may have consumed, may have left some sort of trace in the DNA.

Thank you for your interest & help David :)

Your DNA matches will be descended from common ancestors. Where they were living at any period of time will only have an impact if it led to two people from different places conceiving a child together.
