COMPLETED: Hotel at 44 The Drive, Hove
« on: Sunday 01 December 19 17:15 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor worked at this address as a Hotel Chambermaid in the 1930s, but I'm having trouble finding the name as it seems to have been rebuilt as Copthorne Court flats.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the history of the address and hopefully the name of the hotel please?

Many thanks,
Pixie

What was the name of your ancestor, I can see a Robert W Hartley occ Retired Bank manager at that address in late 30"s, with domestic staff and other residents?

;D Some seriously rich people appear to have lived in The Drive over the years!

A search of old newspapers for 44 The Drive, Hove brings up advertisements for the Hamilton Hotel in the 1940's.  Nothing for the 1930's though.

Not much help I'm sorry, but there is this advertisement in 1937:

"LADY Staff required, new Hotel: cook, chambermaid, waitress; Aga and gas cookers, good wages. - Apply 44 The Drive, Hove."

The Times. (May 24, 1937)

Thank you very much Keyboard, Jool, Barry and Maddys for your replies.

The Times ads were a really great find, Maddy - thank you  :)

So it was a hotel, just as I suspected!!! 8)

You're welcome Pixie.
The last advertisement I can see for the Hotel is in September 1953, so I assume it was demolished and replaced with the Copthorne Court building some time after (it looks like a late 50s/60s building). I've been looking for any old photographs of the Hamilton Hotel, but with no luck.  :)

That's very kind of you, Maddy. I've since found out from RCs on another thread that they might have only worked there for less than a year. By the date of the 1939 Register they'd moved to Letchworth.
