Per FindMyPast - George Sockett bp.1/2/1838 St. Georges, Shropshire, son of William and Maria (William an Iron Roller).

The above place is listed as his birthplace on 1901 census.

William Sockett bp. 24/3/1813 Wellington, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (of Ketley).

However, George's father cannot be the William died 1841 as this was only an infant - William with his parents and George in 1841 but can find no further trace of him, nor anything for wife Maria.

Possibilities?? - a William Sackitt (?) married a Maria Phillips 25/12/1835 Wolverhampton, Staffs. plus there is a death for a Maria Sockett aged 30 in Mar.qtr.1841 West Bromwich, Staffs. (just before the census).

I note that Shifnal was one of the birthplaces given by George on a census pre 1901 (can't remember which one offhand).   Just seen there is a birth for George Sockett in Mar.qtr.1838 Shiffnal Union, and mothers maiden name is Phillips.

A Mary Sockett birth reg'd Dec.1839 West Bromwich - mmn Philips.   Her death is in the same quarter and listed on Ancestry as Mary Sockatt.

So looking like the 1835 marriage may well be the right William and Maria i.e. William moved to Staffordshire after George's birth where a daughter was born/died 1839 plus wife Maria dying early 1841 and William returned with young George to his parents.

Annette,

I think that we have sorted the mystery of George out.
It just throws up the question of his father William, what happened to him???

Thank you to you and Maddy for your time and work.

There is a death registration for a William SEGGATT aged 30 at Blofield in Jun 1845 - I know this is a long way from home, but I can see no other record for William SEGGATT (or similar) born c1815. A possibility? I guess you could only discount for certain by buying the certificate, unless some kind soul can find the burial which may contain more info.  :-\

Maddy,

Thanks for that.
Might be a coincidence but a distant cousin of William in the Manthorpe line was from Blofield!!
Will check it out.
