Look up please 1859 • Wilderness row, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
« on: Tuesday 03 December 19 01:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can someone please look up Wilderness row, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England in 1859 to see if a Joseph JACKSON was living there?  I not sure if you can just look up a road address.  I have been searching for a number of weeks and have come up nothing.

Dundee previously found a fantastic article and this address is on the article.

A link to the pervious thread :

Thank you in advance!

I had a look at the 1861 Census by address and a Joseph Jackson is not listed as living in Wilderness Row. I think I found him, searching by name at 21 St John street, Clerkenwell.
He is listed as a lodger, b1831 Middlesex and occupation pencil maker (it has been transcribed as pensie maker but checking the image, it looks more like pencil).

Debra (Dundee) had already found the St John St entry in 1861 on the last thread. Since two addresses are given for Mr Jackson in the newspaper piece - St John St and Wilderness Row - it may be that the latter was a work address. Alternatively, since the two addresses were just around the corner from each other, the reported (by a boy messenger) connection with Wilderness Row may have been a mistake or approximation.

Yes, I think one of the address' was a work address.

At 21 St John street, Clerkenwell he is listed as a lodger... A married lodger?

I'm wondering if he was married before he met Ellen???

From one of the other threads, I don't think the Wilderness Row connection has been specifically mentioned?

There is an Emma Jackson b abt 1847 Clerkenwell appearing in the 1861 census (with mother Mary) and also 1851 (parents William and Mary) but they don’t seem to have had a son matching JC Jackson’s description - they’d have been very young parents if they did, and he isn’t with them in 1841. Still I’d suggest establishing their early life and any previous marriage for William who was a bit older than Mary, just in case.

1861: RG9/189/5/4
1851: HO107/1518/348/38
1841: HO107/665 bk10 folio 20 p1

1861 census  RG9 189/5/4
3 Wilderness Row, NIGHTINGALE household includes two lodgers:

Mary JACKSON, lodger, Married, 49, Book binder,  Middlesex, Clerkenwell
Emma JACKSON, Daughter of Lodger, 14, Scholar, Middlesex, Clerkenwell
