Before 1841 UK census
« on: Tuesday 03 December 19 06:44 GMT (UK) »
I have a puzzle which would be greatly assisted by Census like data from before 1840. I realise that the first true UK census was in 1841. Is there any other record available to the ordinary person that might contain lists of people (servants most probably) who lived in certain aristocratic households in London between 1820 and 1840?  And if so, would they be on the internet or would I have to travel to the UK to do further research?  I have hints from biographies but no official facts!

Censuses were carried out in 1801,1811, 1821, and 1831, however the 1841 Census is the first one that is of any practical use for family history research, some lists of names from some censuses before 1841 were kept and have survived but only in a rare number of cases.
See Census schedules and listings, 1801-1831: an introduction and guide https://www1.essex.ac.uk/history/documents/research/RT2_Wall_2012.pdf which says:
Thus the lists which survive for 1801 (and the subsequent years) are essentially notes, and are not official documents, like the enumerators’ books for the period 1841 and onwards.

If it was an aristocratic household then there may be estate records that would include employee information. Try emailing the relevant county archives to see if they hold any useful information.
