Bacons from Colcesther.
« on: Wednesday 04 December 19 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking for more info on the Bacons from Colcesther area. Mainly the parents of Emma born between (1830-1835) who left England  for South Africa on the Mersey in 1856. and also info on Charlotte (1837)(father was John King Bacon) who married Herman Ludwig, and also left for South Africa in 1856. Not sure if they are related. I would be happy for any info that can help piece my brickwall together. Thanks Zelda

From FreeReg:-
Marriage 25 July 1830. St Giles, Colchester. John Bacon/ Martha Foxwell. Groom signs himself "John King Bacon"
From Family Search:-
Baptism 2 July 1837. Colchester. Charlotte Bacon. Parents John and Martha. Also Martha (1832), Nancy (1833) and Martha (1835). More children later.
At least 8 births registered in name of Emma Bacon in Essex 1830 -1835 on Family Search. None in Colchester, none to John and Martha.
John was a widower in 1851. Possible death of Martha , age 42. Sept Q, 1847. Registered in Colchester.

Thanks for that info, we were hoping that Emma and Charlotte would maybe sister. but no luck there.
Emma was born in Great Coggeshall, and she died in 1882 in Colchester. She was them married to Gustaf von Kleist. I am looking for any document that would show who her parents were, as the SA death Notice does not show her parents, not sure if the British one does. Thanks again for the help.

Welcome to rootschat

The GRO index has Emma's age at death as 42 making her birth around 1840

Death Sep qtr 1882
Emma Von Kliest  age  42
Colchester    4a   211

English death certificates did not give details of parents.  Where does the information that she was born in Gt Coggeshall come from

Good Morning,
I have had a look at her South African DN, it says she was born in Colchester, and she died "at her husbands house, Pine Villa, Hospital Road, Colchester. I was given Gt Coggeshall, by some documents that have been documented in SA, which I think is incorrect, that's why I am trying to find the right Emma Bacon.
The story as I know it, She married a Germany Soldier Wilhelm Walterhorfer, on 16 Nov 1856, They then left shortly after that on The Mersey bound for East London, South Africa. I am not sure of anything after that until she marries Gustav Adolph Von Kleist on 7 Jan 1880, Colesburg, SA. By then the spelling of the surname had changed to Walterheber/Walterhefer. On the DN her husband has unfortunately got parents unknown.  We have no idea what happened to Walterhoefer.
After getting married Emma must have gotten sick and returned to the UK, with there younger children. By my brickwall here is to find out who her parents were. On the research that they in SA, they show her parents as Joseph and Mary Bacon, but Emma marries a John Nichols and is on the 1881 Cens, she is still with him. So to me this is not the correct Emma. I need to find the correct Emma (she is my 2x Great grandmother). Thanks Zelda

Could that give a clue to her origins.  The Emma that I mentioned earlier (reply 4) had a brother Leonard and a father Robert
