Powell family from Monmouthshire
« on: Wednesday 11 December 19 11:15 GMT (UK) »
My Powell family are a big mystery to me.

On 7 July 1839 Sarah Powell marries Henry Summers. Both are living in Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire. Witnesses were George Evans and Mary Powell. Sarah father was listed as Edward Powell, a farmer.

They had the following children born

Emma 1840
Eliza 1841
Harriet 1843
Arthur 1844
Fanny 1845
Louisa 1848
Martha 1850

In the 1851 census Sarah said she was born in Monmouth.
In the 1861 census Sarah said she was born in Laneyatha, Monmouthshire, Wales
In the 1871 census Sarah said she was born in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales

Sarah was born around 1814 and died in 1878 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.

Ive been unable to find her baptism, siblings, or any other family. Im assuming the Mary Powell mentioned above is her sister but cannot find what becomes of her

A few of my cousins have DNA tested now and there following are Powell DNA matches

1. William Powell who married Mary Gazey in 1829 at St George Hanover Square England by Banns. Witnesses John Woodsman and Sarah Woodsman. They had the following children

Eliza, George, Maria, John and Edward

2. Howell Powell 1816-1882 in Wales married Eleanor Ann Llewellyn 1815-1897 and had the following children

Sarah
Anne
Howell
Elizabeth
John
Rees Llewellyn

Both families have linkages to Wales with one line living in Wales all their life.

Any would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
Not got a lot and I'm not sure how much help this may be
William Powell's wife Mary describes herself as the wife of a servant on the 1861 census.
In Charton Kings on the 1851 is this
Mary A Gabb 65 clergymans widow London
Mary A Powel 39 servant Brecon

could they be siblings?

The other thing is
Howell Powel and Eleanor LLewelyn's marriage 8.3. 1842 Winvoe
Howell  full lab Landilo fawr John farmer
Eleanor LLewellyn full Goldsland Rees Llewelyn labourer

So Howell wasn't a sibling of Sarah  and i can't find a baptism for him.

There was a Sarah Powell bapt 26.8.1808 at LLangattock Vibon Avel d of Edward and Ann farmer
The place is apparently pronounced LLangatwg  F'b'on Afel
No other Sarah's seemingly in Monmouth daughters of an Edward farmer but quite a way out.

Other children  A  2.5.1798 ,Jane 23.8.1802.William 18.9.1803 ,Thomas 8.10.1810 and James 27.3.1812.
But no Mary Ann .
Edward and Ann were both buried in October 1825.Edward 1st 60 years and Ann 50 years on the 11th.

Marriage at Skenfrith 2.5.1796 Edward Powell and Ann Tippins.
Edward's father I'd guess was the same man as
Mary d of William Powell bapt LvA of Warror's Green Skenfrith 19.2.1786.
He has no son Edward baptised but does have a son John 7.2.1774 who could be the father of Howell Powell.

But obviously it could all be a large red herring.

Thanks Ciderdrinker for taking a look!

I was trying to find where Laneyatha was. Is that the anglicised version of Llanarth or LLangattock Vibon Avel ?

As you have highlighted theres really not a lot of options for Sarahs baptism with the father Edward.

Edward births - assuming he wasnt of Irish origin

Edward Powell - 21 Sep 1760 Llanarth, Monmouthshire, Wales  to David
Edward Powell - 13 Sep 1770 Monmouth, St Mary, Monmouthshire, Wales  to William and Ann
Edward Powell - 01 May 1764 Monmouth, St Mary, Monmouthshire, Wales to Edward and Mary

Assuming that Chepstow and Bedwellty were too greater distance to marry that leaves other marriages

Edward Powell marrying Ann Prosser 04 Jun 1789  Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire, Wales
Edward Powell marrying Mary Dubeerly  01 Jul 1788 Monmouth, St Mary,Monmouthshire, Wales

I can see why no one has explored the Powell people in thier family trees!

The earliest I can find a Howell being born is 1756 to Howell Powell so the name has been around for a long time. I wonder if theres a cousin marrying a cousin which accounts for the DNA
