Edward Hitchcocks m Mary Phipps 1799
« on: Thursday 12 December 19 03:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Could a kind soul please look at the marriage of Edward Hitchcocks and Mary Phipps dated 5 April 1799 at Barford St Michael.

I have two questions:

Is Edward from Alkerton/Banbury?

Is Mary's surname Phipps or Philipps?

Many thanks.

Hi mirl,

Edward was from Hockerton??  and mary's surname was Phipps.

They married by Licence.
I can send a screenshot if you would like it. Send me a PM with an email address & I will reply.

I guess 'Ockerton and Alkerton would've sounded extremely similar.

Alan was right, the image clearly looks like Hockerton in the County of Oxford; or Hookerton.

As far as I can see from a quick google search is that there is a place called Hockerton but it is in Nottinghamshire; and there is a place called Hookerton but it is in North Carolina.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I am trying to match up this marriage as the parents of the 13 children born to Edward and Mary Hitchcock/s/x in Alkerton between 1800 and 1823.

But that's my point. It was in 1799 when they had a different concept of spelling.
Hockerton could be something an official wrote when they heard 'Ockerton/Alkerton.
The H-adding could be a form of hypercorrection.

I tend to agree with you after spending some time today looking at old maps and being unable to find anywhere within 20 miles even remotely similar.

I found an index to Oxford Diocese Marriage Bonds and Affidavits 1661-1850 at whipple.org that has this marriage and it says Edward was from Hornton, which is just a couple of miles from Alkerton.

So now, if someone could look at these two baptisms for any place name references it might solve this:

Charles Hitchcox 14 Dec 1800 Alkerton to Edward & Mary
Robert Hitchcox 13 Jun 1802 Alkerton to Edward & Mary
Richardson, Sherman, Gillam, Hitchcock, Neighbour, Groom, Walton, Strange, Littleford, Brown, Guy, Abbs, Tasker, Bartlett, Farey, Etteridge
