Thank you everyone for your information. I have not been able to complete the Fulton newspaper link.
It was in a Society page column.
Here is a screenshot of the paragraph about her, except for the first line which was at the bottom of the previous column, so I just transcribed that line.

The Harlem Valley Times, Thursday, November 22, 1962, page 2, column 1 and 2
"Around the Town"

Mr and Mrs Paul Tierney sr., of Amenia ...

------
edited to add:
It was more like the 14th year of her being in the US, if she was naturalized in 1954.  - And you have her driving into Vermont in 1949 or so ...

I don't know if this was her first entry into the US, but in Nov 1948 she travelled as Vera Bright:

Flight from London to New York, November 22, 1948
Vera Bright, British citizen, with British passport, permanent address: 620 Fifth Avenue, NYC, a receptionist

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2454-C4V

So she was using "Bright" by 1948.
As for why, who knows? Did they ever divorce?  She wanted to break with him and make a new start? It sounded better?

------
1949 Manhattan City Directory
no Vera Bright listed
no Vera Royce listed
but she was a governess, probably at that address on Fifth Ave., so it wouldn't be likely she would be listed in a phone book.

1953 Manhattan City Directory
"B" is missing
no Vera Royce

----
here is a link to that 1949 crossing into Vermont in case you want it for your own records.
