What does this sign mean
« on: Sunday 15 December 19 15:11 GMT (UK) »
I'm pretty sure this is the birth record of my Mum.
She was born in 1943 May, and her name is Lesley Maureen Hammond (Mothers name) but was then fostered out a few years later..

what does the sign mean in front of her name?

If you look for her on FreeBMD you can download the whole page and see that her entry is a footnote and the dagger symbol simply marks both the footnote and the place in the alphabetical list above where Lesley M should be listed.

The fact it has been entered as a footnote suggest that it might be a late registration, or related to a  re-registration (although I can't see a likely candidate for that). You need to order a copy of the certificate which may make things a little clearer.

Hi

Where did the display come from?

Hi
Where did the display come from?

Ray

You can see it by looking at the GRO register image on freebmd, it shows on the bottom of the page where the entry should have been

It's fairly easy to see, as Rosie and davidgp have said, on the relevant GRO sheet

The entry quoted is at the bottom of the sheet and the dagger insert mark is  shown in the left hand margin  above, opposite where the entry should have been.
