Amelia Fulton
« on: Monday 16 December 19 15:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Amelia Fulton was born on 17 November 1879 in Donaghadee to a John Fulton and Agnes McMachon Fulton. Although I do not have a marriage for John and Agnes, I am pretty sure that he is my great-grandfather.

Agnes McMahon came out to South Africa with John, and died there in 1888 with her surname being spelt without the "ç". Her death notice states that she had no living children, so I assume that Amelia died in Donaghadee.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me her date of death. I have been unable to find a gravestone anywhere for her.

Many thanks

Oh wow - thank you very much for all your trouble.   I know from Agnes' death notice that she was 29 when she died, so was probably born in 1859.  The death notice also says she was born in Donaghadee, her father was a James, and her mother had already passed away before 1888.

I had also looked for them coming out to South Africa with no luck, but shipping lists to South Africa are few and far between.  I can also not find a death and/or tombstone for Amelia in Jagersfontein where they lived, so am presuming that she died in Ireland.

I really just wanted to tie up loose ends in my tree, and really appreciate all the searching you did.

Have a great Festive Season  :)

I searched the death records for 1879 to 1888 but did not find any death for Amelia Fulton. Could she had died in South Africa or en route?

Amelia’s birth was registered by Margaret McMachon of Bow St, Donaghadee. She looks to have died on 13.8.1888 in Bow St, aged 48 (spelled McMahon). Her husband was James McMahon, a boatman.

I suspect this is him in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ballycross/Bow_Street/1255172/

He died 11.5.1910 at Bow St, aged 70 (name spelled McMahon). His daughter  Margaret Moore of Bow St was the informant. This looks to be her in 1911:

So Margaret Moore looks to have been a sister to your Agnes Fulton.

Barrow is just across the Irish Sea from Donaghadee, and James McMachon was a boatman/mariner according to the census and his death certificate, so that fits pretty well, I'd say.

That looks very promising to me. Fylde is beside Fleetwood & Heysham, seaports in Lancashire. So the family were evidently back and forth across the Irish Sea, as many others did too.

Elwyn and Dundee - thank you both so much.  I am obviously going to have to get my atlas out :)

Out of interest, why would Margaret register her birth?  Was that common?  John Fulton, my g/grandfather, was an engineer by trade. Unfortunately I have no idea when he came out here with Agnes, and now wonder whether Amelia could have remained in Ireland with her grandparents until they were settled - after all this was the dark continent!

I shall investigate James and Margaret, as well as the possible marriage in England.

Thank you for your help.
