Mary Ann Tonks 1811
« on: Wednesday 18 December 19 11:01 GMT (UK) »
In 1841 Mary Ann Tonks was living in Hollum Kingswinford HO107 996 15 27 10 . (age given as 1816)

In 1851 Mary Ann Tonks was living in Hollum Kingswinford HO 107 2036 569 9

In 1861 Maryann Tonks was living in Brockmoor Kingswinford RG09 2071 126 41

Although the 1861 has her as married, I'm sure she never married. She lived thoughout this period in or very near to, Brockmore (possibly the same dwelling).

Can anyone see a record of her after 1861?

Who is she supposed to be married to?  ie is there a husband and/or children with her in 1861?

Have you ruled out the death 18 Oct 1862.

You know she was born as Mary Ann Tonks and appears as such on all 3 censuses.  1851 clearly shows her as unmarried and the 1862 death is Tonks

She would have had to marry between 1851-1861 and he would also have to be surname Tonks - how likely is that?  No husband in household in 1861 and she is shown as Head.  Very clearly an enumerator error

Thanks

I can't see the details for 18 Oct 1862. Do you think she was buried as Mary and not Mary Ann?

And I agree, unless she married another "Tonks" she was always unmarried.

I would have expected any death to be registered in the Stourbridge RD as that's where she was in 1851 & 1861

Freebmd show her as Mary Ann but GRO online shows the Wolverhampton Dec 1862 death as aged 43 whereas she would have been 51.  There is another married Mary Ann Tonks living in the Wolverhampton RD in 1861 so that death could be hers

The date 18.10.1862 only gives name and county - nothing else

The Dec 1862 death in Stourbridge for Mary Tonks was a 1yr old child

Longshot time

Did she marry between 1851-1861 but mistakenly use her maiden name on the census?

No 1871/1881 entry under Tonks and no death that fits

I am reasonably sure she didn't marry. In 1851 she was living with the Brooks/Cooper families. Maria Brooks was her sister and Elizabeth Cooper was her Aunt.

In 1861 the transcribed record shows her living alone when in fact she was in the same dwelling as Joseph & Elizabeth Cooper. (next door was Emma Wood (née Tonks) her sister in law and Susannah Tonks her niece)

In 1851 she is not living with them - they are living with her.  She is the head of household.

In 1861 the Coopers are her lodgers as per transcription and she is again head of household
