Was William Magee married twice?
« on: Wednesday 18 December 19 13:29 GMT (UK) »
William Magee married Elizabeth Stevenson in Belfast on the 8th October 1895. He was 26 years old but is listed on the marriage records as a Widower. Does anyone know who his first wife was and when she died?

Thanks but I have that record and that's where I saw that William was listed as a "Widower". Who he previously married is the current mystery! :)

I might not be able to help find him, but do you know any more about him? Where he was in 1901 or 1911, siblings, birth registration, etc? It would help others to narrow him down.

You're very welcome.

It really does help us all if you post a link to the record to save us from searching and checking them.

There are a possible 22 marriages between 1885 and 1894 in the Belfast area alone.  If you don't specify a place then the total is 70 which includes Belfast.

This is assuming that his first marriage was in Ireland and not elsewhere.  Did he spend all his time in  Ireland or some of it in the UK?

England: Devon, London, New Zealand

Southcott: Devon, China

KG - good point about quoting the link - apologies to all as I get the hang of this ancestor hunting lark!
The 1901 Census has William and family living at 97 Mayo Street, Belfast although, according to Lennon-Wylie, that house was occupied by A. McCallum. By the 1911 Census he was living at 45 Lanark Street, Belfast and that's accurate. He had two daughters with Elizabeth, Maud and Christina. My grandfather married Christina in 1935 (known as Teeny as for a few years she became my step mother before her death in 1952.) On the marriage document referred to by KG William lived at 21 Great Patrick Street, Belfast and his father was also called William. Both were labourers. That's all the information I have at present.  Some links:

So he was born in Antrim and was Church of Ireland.

And there are no children with him from his first marriage.
So either they weren't married very long, which might narrow down the time frame for his first marriage, or the child(ren) were being raised by his first wife's parents, which wouldn't help you find him very much.
