Crime 'no city ord"
« on: Thursday 19 December 19 13:38 GMT (UK) »
What is this crime
No city Ordl

In aug 1887 Jacob Fellman
was taken to Monroe penitentiary

With ,3 others Patrick Tucker
William H Williams
Patrick Mcfarlan
The last column had days in jail/ fine 10 days or 5 dollars?

Why did Jacob get 20 days / 10 dollars

Was it a choice or fine AND prison.

It does say OR, which implies a choice.

Usually in the UK it means the fine; if unpaid, the jail time. It's likely to be the same in the US, I would think. May I recommend the Legal Genealogist blog? Very much US-centred, but fascinating even for people on the other side of the Pond.

The record clearly says 20 days or $10 (i.e. pay the fine or go to jail). The crime was "Vio City Ord" - presumably a violation of city ordinances.

Judge Keeler must have considered Jacob's crime more serious than the others.

The sentence is up to the judge - jail time, a fine or both.

"Ord" is short for ordinance.  In other words, they were convicted of something like littering or loitering or loud music.

Wow 10 or 20 days sounds haRsh
For litter or loitering

And the fines seem hefty too

Ive lost the page so can't go back and compare with punishment s for other crimes on same page
