Rowan's from Tralee/Castlegregory area
« on: Friday 20 December 19 13:41 GMT (UK) »
My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Rowan. Her Father was Thomas Rowan who died before 1894. I do not know her Mother's name. Mary was born around 1874. She married Thomas Hoare of Castlegregory on 29 September 1894 in Tralee, where she was living at the time. Thomas died at the workhouse hospital in Tralee on 20 January 1914. Mary died in Tralee on 19 December 1947.

I would love to know any information anyone can provide about Mary Rowan and her family.

Kind Regards,

Andrew

And this looks like them in the 1911. Ten children born and six still living (it's difficult to read).

This presumably is them in the 1901 Irish census. Thomas is a tailor.

That's them yes. I know quite a lot about the Hoare side of the family, but the Rowan side is proving to be very difficult to research.

Hi

Can you be certain Mary Rowan was actually born in Kerry, despite what it says on the two census returns?

Only did a quick search, but couldn’t find a likely birth for her in Kerry - with a father named Thomas, a farmer (as stated at time of her marriage).

However in Kilrush, Co Clare, a Mary Rowen was born in 1872 to a Thomas Rowen, a farmer.  See:-

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1872/03230/2184233.pdf

Also at the time of your Mary’s marriage in 1894, she states her father Thomas is dead.

Again in Kilrush, Co Clare in 1880 there was the death of a 36 year old Thomas Rowan - a married farmer - and it seems there was a Coroner’s report.   See:-

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1880/06484/4865789.pdf

Might be worth checking out this Mary who was born 1872, in Kilrush - if only to eliminate her.  Time doesn’t allow me do this at the moment.

Regards

Funnily enough I've just come across these Kilrush records myself today. I have no way of confirming or denying whether or not these records are related to the Mary Rowan I'm searching for as I know so little about her. If her age on her marriage certificate, death certificate, and the two censuses are to be believed then she was born between 1873 and 1875, so the 1872 Kilrush record is most certainly a possibility, although, as I said, I wouldn't know how to confirm it or not.

I've read online today that the Rohan (an alternative spelling) seem to have been based around the Castlegregory area in the 1800s, but I still can't find a connection via a Thomas or Mary Rowan. Very strange.

Hi again

I don’t see a marriage in Clare (Kilrush or Ennis) for Mary Rowen - a daughter of Thomas.  Wonder did Mary move out of that county....

Nor do I see a single Mary Rowen (born in Clare) in the 1901 census.

Cheers

I do have a marriage certificate for Mary Rowan and Thomas Hoare. They were married in Tralee in 1894. It does state her father as Thomas Rowan and also states she was living in the Ballyard area of Tralee at the time of the marriage.

Both 1901 and 1911 censuses I have for the Thomas Hoare and Mary Rowan family say that Mary was born in Tralee.

It is rather a mystery.

Thanks,

Andrew
