If you search in contemporary newspapers you will find lots of references to the Poor Law Service in the same way that we talk about the National Health Service today.  I think the Poor Law Service was a generic term for all the people who worked in support of services provided by  local boards of Guardians in compliance with the Poor Law: in the workhouses and their associated infirmaries.

The occupation of both the groom and the bride was given as "Poor Law Service"   Does anyone know what this is?

In the 1911 census he is "Army Pensioner & Master Sgt C Clerk" living in Chesterfield

I can't find a service record but there was a C H Catt (830) who served in the Boer War as Colour Sergeant and Quarter Master Sergeant with 3rd Battalion East Lancs Regiment. Invalided 30.8.01 and transferred to depot per the medal roll.

Shaun, That is him. His CWGC entry gives his rank as quartermaster sergeant. He is commemorated on Brampton Derbyshire war memorial which I am trying to find something about each name.  also in Walthamstowe where he died.  I didn't know of the Boar war service.
Thanks for the information It explains why he is so difficult to find in the censuses.
