Family tree Maker
« on: Monday 23 December 19 15:50 GMT (UK) »
Its been several years since I was last on here.  Waning to get back into searching my family tree.  I have put my old family tree maker version 2014 on my computer but it wont work anymore, apparently I need the new 2019 version, which looks expensive.

My concern about downloading it again, what if they make this version unusable in a few year, it seems a bit unfair.

Has anyone else got the new version and is it worth the price.

Many thanks, looking forward to getting my teeth back into it again

If you pay for and download the latest version you would be eligible for any upgrades, so I wouldn't let that stop me.  The initial cost would be your determining factor.

I find the program to be pretty good for my needs.  I'm not creating massive charts or publishing the tree.  One of the handy features is their synch process:  if there is some temporary issue with the synch function they will let you know.  You can come back in a little while and finish the synch with Ancestry.

I'm sure others will offer their opinions as well.

Get in touch with FTM and explain the situation to them, a lot of people who have done that have been offered an upgrade to FTM2019 rather than having to buy the complete new version.

In my PC I have Family Tree Maker versions 2010, 2014, 2017 and 2019. They all work, but only the 2019 connects to Ancestry. If 2014 does not open normaly, open it as "Run as administrator" "Right button on the mouse" but you will not get connected to Ancestry.

If, by any chance, you saved your old data as a GEDCOM format file, you can import it into any of the current family history software products.

Hi Fossey,

I had FTM 2012 and found it to be great for a couple of years, then, like you, I spent some time away for a few years and when I returned I couldn't get FTM to work, and just built it in Ancestry directly.

Now am thinking this was a mistake (all the photos I uploaded will never download again attached to the correct person), so this morning I 'bit the bullet' and bought the 2019 download from https://www.mackiev.com/ftm/
Will let you know how I find it.

I included the DNA add on in my purchase and this was a big consideration for me in the overall purchase, as I am intent on finding Mum's Grandma Annie's birth mother and am hoping the DNA tools will help.
I am fortunate to have the most wonderful parents! Both still alive and well into their 80s.

Many thanks for all your replies.  No I never saved in Gedcom before.  I have updated my tree over the last few years on Ancestry direct only, but only as and when I found something, not been too serious about it.

I have sent them a message, so will see what they say

thanks again.

I managed to get £20 off, so it is only £59 instead of £79.  Thanks for the advice, cant wait to start again, just hope it works ok.
