Not sure which is the most appropriate board for this query.
My connection with the Scrines is through my grandmother Kate Scrine who married Edward G Rogers.
Looking at the records which I have collected there is one question about which I would like some extra information.
Frederick Scrine was born in Holt, near Bradford on Avon in 1844 to Charles and Henrietta, one of seven children. Kate would have been his niece.
In 1861 he is shown living at the White hart in Holt as a servant, but I have no indication of him for the next 13 years until he marries Eliza John from Haverford West in 1874. They lived in Swansea until he died in 1898. He was described as a cabman and coachman/groom in the 1881/91 Census records.
My question is why did he go to Swansea and what was he doing between 1861 and 1874?
Alongside the above, a couple of interesting facts relating to his family. His son Frederick George played Rugby for Wales bwtween 1899 and 1901 and his great grandson Francis played soccer for Swansea Town and was twice capped for Wales in 1950.
With regard to the latter, Francis, I was going through some old stuff in the study the other day and came across a bundle of old football programmes, (I am an inveterate hoarder). I came across one from Bristol Rovers, February 1949, so it could not have been a match which I had been to.
On that occasion Rovers (2nd in the table) were playing Swansea Town, top of the old 3rd division South table at Eastville.
Just glancing through the prog before deciding whether to keep or throw, I noticed on the left wing (no 11) F Scrine.
Any info regarding Frederick's wanderings down to Swansea would be appreciated.
