If Mary wasn't baptized as a Roman Catholic..and this may end up as a gigantic red herring :-\
A baptism at Sefton, 17 August 1788, Mary daughter of Edward and Mary Webster. Born 23 July 1788, living at Ford.
(Father Edward is good, as we know Robert and Mary Shepherd had a son Edward)

Looking at siblings, the first on the list (I am going on Lancashire OPC) is Esther, bap 18 July 1784, born 11 June.
Have to be careful here, because there is another Esther from Ford/Sefton, different parents, in 1787.
Anyway, a marriage at Sefton, 2 December 1805
Joseph Shepherd + Esther Webster

Baptisms of children?

1851, Litherland
Esther Shepherd is 67, born Ford. Husband Joseph is still alive. Also 67, born Lunt.
Their daughter Esther must have married a Harrison (Richard in 1849, but I think probably not a relation of your Robert though)

Esther Shepherd seems to have died in 1854, age 70. Buried 1 Nov at Sefton. Abode Litherland.

Joseph Shepherd - there is a burial in Sefton, 3 June 1860, age 76. Abode Litherland
For Joseph, Lancashire OPC says "Roman written in Ministers column"

Could be falling apart already!
A Joseph Shepherd bap Sefton to James and Jane in 1785. Abode Lunt.
Not a Catholic record, but could he be the man who later married Esther Webster?
A possible sibling for him is Priscilla, bap January 1792 (abode Thornton)
Which is interesting as Joseph and Esther had a 22 year old Priscilla with them in 1841, presumably their daughter.

No Robert indexed to James and Jane in Sefton. But I suppose they may have had one baptized in a catholic place of worship (here's hoping!). He'd have to be just after Priscilla.

But probably then Joseph Shepherd marrying Esther Webster will turn out to be coincidence.

Apologies for not replying before now jonw65. The living have been demanding my attention :-)

Thank you, I've saved that info, as you say, it may not be the right people but you never know what else may turn up in time that will either confirm or deny it.

The long numbers on the MIs I have given you refer to the number in the burials transcription. A gentleman spent years probably transcribing and editing everything.

Hope some of it may help

goodness me Gibel, that's way more than a 'bit of research' Thank you!

It will take me a while to digest it all , but have saved it to peruse.

The lack of Shepherd baptisms is a puzzle, Jane Shepherd, who I believe is the daughter of Robert Shepherd and Mary (likely nee Webster, consistently says she was born in Litherland on the later census returns and I'd hoped to be able to confirm that and get confirmation of her parents.

Will give it all my attention and try once again to explore other parishes etc.

I really appreciate the time and effort you have gone to, thank you again.

Hi,

I hope you don't mind me joining this conversation. My wife is descended from Alice Shepherd b.1857 daughter of Robert Shepherd and Ellen Cowduck (Coldock/Coledock/Couldock are alternative spellings). Alice married William Frederick Shearwood 3 April 1876 at St Chrysotoms Church, Everton. William was born in Barrow-on-Humber, Lincolnshire and moved to Liverpool with his father of the same name, mother, brother and sisters. The family lived mainly in Everton, but William moved to Crosby after marrying. All Shearwood's in the locality are descended from this family.

Ellen Cowduck was the daughter of Thomas Coldock and Ann Webster. I noticed a few references to Webster in this thread and wondered whether it was through this connection that Robert was introduced to Ellen after the death of his first wife Margaret Cross. Also the Coldock family moved around quite a bit and have links to Fazackerley, Walton and Kirkby, which crop up quite a bit in the conversation.

I've been searching for the ancestors of Robert for a number of years without much success and if it is ok I'd like to incorporate some of what I have read here into our family tree. We are residents of Sefton.

I also look forward to hearing the thoughts of the rest of the group.

Kind Regards
John
