Myers & Herkomer
« on: Saturday 28 December 19 20:34 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of Joseph Myers/Meirs (b. 1826) - a German immigrant who married Sophia Evans (b. 1839) of Llanllechid? They were married in Toxteth in 1860 and had two daughters who were born in Llanllechid (Bethesda): Sophia (b 1862) and Catherine (b. 1863). Joseph was a picture framer and may have had a connection to Sir Hubert von Herkomer the renowned Victorian portrait painter who painted Lord Penrhyn in 1881. Herkomer was in Bethesda in 1881 as a visitor in Henry Jones' house in Pantglas and Sophia Myers nee Evans was Henry's sister-in-law - the sister of his wife Ann Evans. I'm trying to find why Herkomer was in Pantglas with Henry and Ann Jones in 1881.

Preparing for a painting, by the looks of it. Papers in May 1881 note he is working on a large work, a companion to his "Ramparts of Idwal" and he was camping out by Llyn Ogwen

Thanks for the links. I knew about all this; Herkomer was in Cwm Idwal every spring between 1879 and 1884. Accompanying him was his inamorata, Lulu Griffiths who was with him in Bethesda in 1881. But what I'm interested in is any information about Joseph Myres - a German émigré who was a 'picture dealer' in 1871 and he lived in Mostyn St., Llandudno with his 3rd wife, Margaret Barlow in 1881. His 2nd wife was Sophia Evans (b. 1839) who was the sister of Ann Jones - the wife of Henry who lived in Pantglas, Bethesda and it was in their house that the Herkomers stayed in the 1881 census. Obviously there's a link to the art world and to German nationality through Sophia to Joseph.
Thanks for your help.
