Some newbie help please - Civil Registration Index
« on: Monday 30 December 19 23:28 GMT (UK) »
Merry Christmas all  :)

I hope I'm in the right location for this post? I've been researching a branch of my tree that leads to Kensington and have come across the England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915.

Unfortunately, these records only indicate the name of the child, the the year and quarter when they were born? I wan't more... but am not sure where to turn. Name is Louisa Roffe and she was born between Oct. and Dec. 1849. Where do I get more - Ancestry doesn't provide any help.

Please help :'(
Crawford, Smith, Marr, Newton, McClement, and more :)

GRO should give mmn.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Added:
Louisa Roffe  mmn Gardiner   1849 December quarter Kensington, Paddington and Fulham

If the birth is not showing in parish on Ancestry, then buy the certificate.

Have you found her in the censuses?

There is a possible Charles Roffe/Louisa Gardiner marriage, and they can easily be found in 1851.  The parents are not from London.

One person with that name born about that time can be found in Ontario. Canada later in her life.

Charles and Louisa with 4 children appear to be in Garafraxa, Wellington, Canada West in 1861.

chempat - YOU ROCK!

Thanks for the tip on the GRO search. There are many ancestry trees that show the mother as Gardiner but I want to make sure before I just go with what others have done. This proves it for me... and yes - i did find them in the census for 1851 - attached.

It shows Charles as 32 and a Stone Mason and their address is 96 Waterloo St. - his son, Alfred is 7. I tried looking at the 1841 census but it shows Charles as 20 and a mason with a son named Alfred who is 2. As you can see, the ages don't match up???? Or am I missing something? :o

Ages for adults in the 1841 census are rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

Possibly the 2 yr old Alfred in 1841 is this one

ROFFE, ALFRED  WILLIAM     GARDNER
GRO Reference: 1839  S Quarter in NORTHLEACH  Volume 11  Page 331

Did he die?

Added...yes

ROFFE, ALFRED  WILLIAM     3
GRO Reference: 1843  J Quarter in CIRENCESTER UNION  Volume 11  Page 170
