Scottish variants in first name Bartholomew
« on: Tuesday 31 December 19 04:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone could advise me if Barclay and Bartholomew were interchangeable first names in early Scotland.  I am looking at a time frame around 1700-1740 in the Midlothian area.
I suspect they referred to the same person but would like confirmation if possible.

Baptised Barclay Auld 1709 to parents William Auld & Margaret Masson, Mid Calder.
Dau Margaret baptised to Barclay Auld in 1738, wife named ..... Jamieson, Mid Calder.
Witnesses to baptism Hugh Graham & Robert Auld (brother)

Bartholomew Auld (brother Robert) married Anna Jamieson 1736, Mid Calder.
Son Robert bapt 1738/1739.
Witnesses Hugh Graham & Robert Auld (brother)

In 1738 Robert Auld & his wife Julian Jamieson baptised a dau named Ann.
Witnesses Bartholomew & Walter (confirmed brother) Auld.

Regards
Chris

Scottish surname Bartie (Dundee etc) has a Bartholomew origin.

I knew in Ireland Bartholomew and Bartley/Barclay were interchangeable but this site says Scotland also-

Variations apply to Bartholomew as a surname too.

As well as surnames Barclay (1732, 1733) and Bartholomew (1737), I have the same person in Kirkliston as Bartleman (1734) and Bartlemay (1740). Barclaman has also turned up as a Bartholomew variation, once in 1716 and again in 1718. In fact in 1718 a Barclaman witnessed a Bartholomew child, showing both variations were recognised at the same time and were not just a quirk of the clerk.

Seems you have to search on anything beginning with Bar!

Hi
I would like to apologise for the delay in replying to all who have posted replies to my Bartholomew / Barclay posting.  I live on the eastern seaboard of NSW, Australia where just about everyone has been caught up in the current fires.  I am now back on the family history trail and this morning located documentary evidence to confirm that Bartholemew and Barclay were definitely the same person.
My sincere thanks to all who reply.
Chris
