Milson/Milsom marriage 1760 and 1761
« on: Wednesday 01 January 20 21:48 GMT (UK) »
Kind of confused (doesn't take much) but my 6 x great Grandparents appear to have married twice within a week.  The first date was 26th December 1760 listed as either Salisbury, Wiltshire or Hampshire.  Their names were John Milson/Milsom and Susannah Gwyn.  They were then married on 1st January 1761 in Holt Chapel.  I have seen the record for the Holt marriage and they were married by license.

Susannah was bapt 1743, so could it be that they ran off, got married, came home then had another marriage, for their families??

Any ideas?

TIA

Is the first date definitely a record of a marriage or could it be the reading of banns?

There is a transcript for the 1760 entry from FHL film 1278952
Susanna Gwyn m Jno. Milson 26 Dec 1760 Hampshire, England

The FHL film 1278952 contains
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A1278952

including
Items 1-18: Marriage licence bonds in Peculiar Court of the Dean and Chapter of Sarum, 1682-1823

Perhaps that first entry is the marriage bond.

You would need to see the original documents referred to for both of your results to confirm exactly what they are

To tie in to Rosie's reply.
Wilts FHS have produced a CD of Marriage Licence Bonds for the counties of Dorset, Berks & Wilts.
The licence #24262 reads;
John Milsom, of Holt, Wilts  &
Susanna Gwin of Holt, Wilts
Bondsman; Isaac Crook, of Bradford.
Dated; 26-12-1760

Hope this helps.

This is the entry that has me confused, I already had the marriage by license that you sent but they married on 1st January 1761. So am I right in thinking that the entry dated 26th December 1760 was just the record of the license that the couple obtained to get married without Banns?

At the time of their marriage he would have been either 23 or 25 whereas she would have been around 18.  Their first child was baptised 25th October 1761 in Staverton, so depending on his age they might have "had to get married"

Yes - thats how I interpret the events;
Took out  a marriage licence on 26-12-1760 and married 6days later on 1st Jan 1761
