St Mary's Ilkeston (Derbyshire) lookup please
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 07:15 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track down William Hardy, the son of Joseph and Ann (Nanny) Hardy, who later in life was known as William Erasmus Hardy and ended up as governor of Ilchester Gaol in Somerset.

His brother was Thomas Masterton Hardy who was Lord Nelson's friend and colleague on the ship Victory (of "Kiss me Hardy" fame). Although Joseph and Ann were based in Dorset, it's possible they were with family friends in Derbyshire when William was born and that he was baptised locally.

I would be grateful for a lookup of a baptism at St Mary's, Ilkeston, in November 1774, of a William Hardy to parents Joseph and Ann.

Many thanks!

Phil (Bath, UK)

William Erasmus Hardy died in Bath registration district in 1838.  How do you know that he was born in Derbyshire.  He married in Westminster in 1800

I'm fairly well versed in the history of William Erasmus Hardy... See here for my notes:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aoTpq7AM95RRyRkBDf8OnYpnqoZ2UEmAUt7Ex5p6gX0/edit?usp=sharing

The link to Thomas Masterton Hardy is a family story and so I have not included in the doc above. I'm just exploring it now. The timing of his birth and the naming convention of his children lend some vague support. At the moment I'm exploring all avenues.

Best

Phil

Online references to Thomas including his baptism have his middle name as Masterman

Ah, thank you! I thought I'd checked the IGI record sets. Clearly not carefully enough, clearly.

I've found the baptism in question.

Best

Phil

The surname on the November 1774 baptism looks more like Hooley than Hardy  :-\

Yes, I agree. 'Hardy' is a tenuous transcription at best. I think the search goes on!
