there is 78 John Mckenies on record  having served
either in a foot regiments or the RVB regiments,
and after going through those and checking ages,
places born if known, date of discharge,
unless his record is missing,
the 2 most likely candidates are the one you have
from moy or the tyree one none of the rest tie in with
the time frame you have for his discharge,
the ones in the 42nd are far to early bar one
which was from 1823 onward,
how much you ll actually see in those records i don t know,
but i can see eough to rule most john mckenzies out,
that is unless his record is missing

That could well be the correct Peter Shaw. I will look into that a bit more.

I am a little confused what you mean, I don't think that either of the John McKenzie's from Moy or Tyrie are my John as dates and details don't add up.

John McKenzie (from Coll) who was in the 42nd reg of foot & the 6th RVB was discharged in August of 1814. He had been in the 6th RVB since early 1805 and had been in the 42nd Regiment of Foot since 1792/93, and I have found several documents of his time in the 42nd. The dates of service for this John, his place of birth, his date of discharge correlates with his subsequent move back to the Isle of Coll. In the same Company of the 42nd Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion is Serjeant Peter Shaw, who witness the baptsim of John's daughter Elizabeth in 1808 in Ardersier, so it fits that that is how John & Peter knew each other.

there could very well be papers from 1793 i dismissed those of that date
being to early there is records there for that year could very well
be admission papers i you go onto the national archives and enter in the
military sectionhis name then just add foot regiments 68 comes up
none mentions coll some have born unknown,
then after you ve checked those remove all filters and  put either royal veterans
or 6th royal veterans instead of foot regiment, click search again and 8 comes up
you ll have a better idea of what your looking than i do,
what i will do is search peter shaw that might help

Hi All

I had a problem with a service record for a Chelsea pensioner until I found his discharge papers from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the records are held at KEW and on the record gives place of birth, date of discharge to pension, how long he served, also gives rate of pension and his date of death as this is the only way Chelsea Pensioners are discharged as most have suffered wounds that cannot be cured at the time we are looking at a lot of the pensioners suffered from ophthalmia.

Yours Aye
