Looking for Mich* Herron (Herring/Heron)
« on: Monday 06 January 20 18:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm looking for records for a Michael (Michail) Herron (Herring) post the 1881 census (Folkestone). He was born in Lismore, Waterford, Ireland around 1825 and married to Margaret and at some time was based in the channel Islands.

Any help appreciated!

Have you already ruled out the 1891 death on freebmd under Herring?  Died 10.11.1891.  Looks like he was buried in a public grave

1881 shows occ as a fish & fruit dealer.  Have you found Margaret or either of the 2 sons on later censuses?

Can't see any obvious 1891 entries for the sons.  Perhaps they returned to Ireland after the 1881 census?

A Margaret Herring aged 60 died 1886 St Saviour whereas the 1891 death was St George in the East

Hi CaroleW,

did see the 1891 death in St George, but could not see the trail from Folkestone to London (in Census) from 1881 to 1891. His earlier children (Margaret, Thomas and Mary) all lived and died in Folkestone. The name changed, probably due to transcribers from Heron to Herring to Herron over 30 years. I guess they could all have gone back to ireland?

There is a Michael Heron/Herring the right age who's in and out of the Workhouse/infirmary in Southwark and Stepney/Tower Hamlets in 1890/91 - occupation appear to be labourer

Only thing is, similar person is doing similar things in 1880 - 82

If he remained in Folkestone there should be a death in the Elham RD which covered that location.  Just searching deaths for mic* from 1881 onwards gives no results apart from a Michael C Heron who died 1912 and was b 1836

Hi CaroleW,

I agree there should be a death at some time in Elham if he remained on Folkestone, but alas no record. I wonder if he and Margaret moved after 1881 census.

I've got copy of the DC for M C Heron who died in 1912. Intriguingly, it gives 'Marine Hawker' (Fish Dealer?) as the profession. So, would be a hit if it wasn't for the age of 76 - which equals DoB of 1836?
