How can I get hold of this record?
« on: Wednesday 08 January 20 14:18 GMT (UK) »
According to Ancestry, there is a record for Hercules Hollyland dated 1660 in their UK, Extracted Probate Records, 1269-1975 [database on-line].. Unfortunately this is a "text-only collection" so there's no image for me to see.

I can't find this record for Hercules on any other website. I'd happily pay the smidgeon required by the National Archives for a download, but they don't list it.

Any ideas?

This record has not been digitised and cannot be downloaded.  Request a quotation for a copy to be digitised and sent to you.

Aha!

--tis a wonderful thing to scroll down the screen, isn't it  ::)

thank you!

-- now, I've never ordered a search from the NA. It says that you need the page nummber. Ancestry just gives this as reference:

Name:    Hollyland, Hercules
Dates:    1660
Place:    General, England
Book:    Index to Acts of Administration in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 1655-1660 (Acts of Administration)
Collection:    England: Canterbury - Administrations in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 1655-1660 (G-Q)
Text:    Hollyland, Hercules, St. Bartholomew the Great, London 1660 169

Do you think that the final 169 will be the page?

In practice, yes. 169 is actually the folio number in the Administration Act Book, so you need to include that in your order.

What you will be getting is a copy of the original entry in the Act Book, recording a grant of administration made for his estate.

It will probably be only 3 or 4 lines. Such entries are very variable at this date (during the Interregnum), but it might give his place of residence, occupation, date of the grant, name of the administrator (possibly with any relationship), and a date for the inventory to be submitted to the court. There's unlikely to be much else. I would expect it to be in English, but it might be in Latin.
