Can someone please point me in the right direction where to find records for British soldiers that served in the American Revolution? The soldier I am researching deflected and joined the Continentals, supposedly changing his surname.  I am hoping there is an online resource with British soldier names listed? Or maybe a deflector list?
The only other information I have is the area he deflected.
Thanks in advance for your help and time.

I do recall that several years ago I came across an article about a database that was being compiled of all the soldiers who participated in the Battle of Saratoga and that it would include British soldiers as well as American.  I'll see if I can find it.  Other than that, I've never seen any list of British enlisted men; the officers are pretty well known.  A defector who changed his name is going to be a real challenge.

What was the name of your man? And which regiment did he defect (no L in defect  :)) from? Date?

There are letters generated during the American Revolution aka War of Independence all over the place.
If he defected it is likely he was mentioned in something.

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. Has the papers of Guy Carlton  (I had to pay someone to look at them for me, they are bound in about 14 books I seem to remember)
The army records will be there too.

Different US universities seem to have collected papers belonging to different generals
Eg Sir Henry Clinton’s are here

I was really hoping for an online site with a compiled list of British Soldiers who fought on American soil. It is shocking there is not such a list.
I did speak to the National Archives, who suggested I hire a private researcher.

Erato - that would great. Thanks! Let me know if you can locate it.

Mckha489 - thanks for the correction. I am normally hesitant to utilize these forums because of my dyslexia, which always brings me embarrassment.

Mckha489 - Thanks! I will take a look at this site.

Early American newspapers are a rarity, especially in the location I am looking at.

Thanks all for your help. I have reached out to a researcher as directed by the National Archives.

This is probably the article I am recalling.  I have never tried out the database because as best as I have been able to tell, none of my ancestors were at Saratoga.
