John Cunningham Paisley
« on: Friday 10 January 20 14:05 GMT (UK) »
As a Yorkshire man, I was surprised to find that my G.Grandfather John Cunningham was born in Paisley Scotland c.1820

He was the son of another John Cunningham and his wife (Ellen Magin born Busby Scotland)
The family gradually moved south to Yorkshire.

He married (as a minor) in 1838 at Hovingham Yorkshire his father being described as
Hawking Pedlar.
I have traced most of the family in Yorkshire, mainly Scarborough.

As I have some indications that they may have been Catholics, my query is, was he and his father Renfrewshire Scots? Or were they Irish immigrants?
Are there any records in Scotland to clarify?

[PS although I am 74, technically......can I play Rugby for Scotland?]

I note his marriage and the 1861 census in Scarborough, which states his place of birth as Paisley.
However there are no records on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for John either C of S or RC.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

1851 has wife as Harriet b 1814 (1838 marriage has maiden name Traynar) which means she would have only been 14 when they married.  However - by 1861 she is 59 and has a 10mth old son - I think not!!  1871 she’s 48 which again questions her age when they married.  She was 55 when she died in 1878

Thankfully - John is consistent with his birthyear of 1820

Thank you all [ColC-Raonull4-and CaroleW]
Barry

Although John Cunningham states born Paisley, it would seem he was Baptised/Registered elsewhere....???

I am pretty sure that this family moved south together John Cunningham Senior and son John

John Senior and wife Ellen had children (Ellen is named variously Magin, Maken and Mc Ginn)
Mary b.Stockton on Tees 1831
Rose b.Caldwell near Fawcett (Darlington) 1832 [Parents listed as 'Travelling for work']
Thomas b. Holme on Spalding Moor (Holme Hall Catholic Chapel)1835
Ellen b. Scarborough (St Peters R.C.) 1838

Having married in 1838, John Cunningham Jnr had children-
Mary b. 1841 Wold Newton Yorks.
Peter b. 1846 Scarborough
Jane b. 1849 Scarborough
Ellen b. 1851 Scarborough

On the 1851 census Ellen is listed as Widow of John Cunningham Senior living at 7 Halls Yard, Cross Street Scarborough.
Her son John Jnr is living at 73 William Street Scarborough

On the 1871 census, Mary the daughter of John Senior (b. Stockton) is living with John Cunningham Jnr (her brother) at 10 West Place Scarborough. She having married [so named Mary Small] now a widow.

If you can't find it on Scotland's People it's more likely that his baptism record, if it ever existed, has not survived. There was no requirement for registration until 1855.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
