I have probably put this in the wrong place, sorry.  Not sure where to find correct board.

I have a Peter Doyle born approx 1803 in Ireland, he was an engineman on his sons marriage cert.  I have found him (I think) in the 1841 census married to a Mary in Cleator Moor, Cumberland.  It says coal miner, then again on 51 he was an engine driver, but was a widow. So think that was him.  I know he married a Mary and she was apparently a quaker, he was Catholic.  They came over from Ireland sometime before 1830 as their children were all born in Cumberland.

My question is, how do you find people in Ireland ie marriage and passenger lists, and how would I find out if their religion was right.  I have been told that Cleator Moor was called little Ireland and the majority of them were Catholic who came over from Ireland.

Many thanks

Unfortunately there weren't passenger lists between England and Ireland to help us out.

You might need someone who could check the parish registers of St Marys Church Cleator - that was the Catholic Church for Cleator Moor area.

Did they have any children c1837 or afterwards?  If so we can look up the birth registrations to find Mary's maiden name.

If Rachel was the youngest child then she is just too early  :(

A catholic baptism for one of the children may also give the mothers maiden surname  :-\

Think they would have married in Ireland not England.  But could be wrong.

Yes they had 4 children, that I know of, but unfortunately Rachel was the youngest.  Mary 1829, James 1830 who is my GG grandad, Edward 32 and Rachel 36.  All born in Whitehaven.   I think Mary (mam) died in 1850 in Whitehaven.

Would the children be Catholic with the mother being Quaker.  Not sure when the religion changed in the family as it isn't anymore

Best to take the advice about looking for children's baptisms first to determine mother's maiden name. However, earliest civil registration in Ireland is 1845 so you would need a location in order to even start searching for Irish registers (not all survive for such an early period and of those that do all are not online).
