1841 census search help
« on: Monday 13 January 20 00:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I'm struggling to find a family in the 1841 census and I was wondering if you could share your expertise or search techniques I may be missing. My other thought is that sections of the census may be missing but I'm not sure how I would check that.

The family can be found in 1851 in Thixendale, Yorkshire. I expect the family to be the same in 1841 but 10 years younger and one addition. Everything leads away to 1861 onwards with ease, and before that relevent birth/christening/marriage records have been found. This branch of my tree before and after 1841 is all located very close together in the area of Thixendale and Pocklington, so I have no reason to think they'll be elsewhere.

So, the family is...

Thomas Duck b. 1801 Pocklington (head and widowed)
Hannah Duck b. 1829 Thixendale (daughter)
Sarah Duck b. 1830 Thixendale (daughter)
Ann Duck b. 1834 Thixendale (daughter)

Now, Thomas was married to a Mary PIERCY in 1827, however she died in 1847, so I expect her to be with the family in 1841.

Thanks

Andrew

Is there anyway to do a location search or to physically view page by page? Thixendale is a very small village, so I would happily look through all the pages but I can't see a way to do that.

p.s I'm using MyHeritage

OK so I've had partial success. I've tried an image number trick on MyHeritage to browse through pages of the town of Thixendale with no luck, though I did think it didn't seem logical even though the image/set numbers were in numerical order.

Anyway I headed over to Ancestry to see if the search function was different, also with no luck. However, as a stab in the dark I typed 'lived in' Thixendale as exact, and surname as DUCK. And there they are, only 5 results and its each family member.

As i'm not a member of Ancestry, I can't view the original so I was hoping someone could view the original and obtain relevent details that meant I could obtain it from MyHeritage. The transcribe is wrong for Thomas (Thos) and Hannah (Hant) but they are there.

Thanks

Andrew

YES thats them. Assuming you used something other than MyHeritage, does it give an image number by any chance? For example HO107-1212_119?

Wharram Percy is what I was expecting. Is there anything else to indicate a town or area? The search will accept Thixendale (town) for example as a residence, but not Wharram Percy.

Thank you both. At the risk of sounding a complete pest, if you are able to view the original, could you check something? I have managed to get up each page of Wharram Percy (2 pages, 35 people) and Thixendale (what appears to be 9 pages). First, at the top center of each page is a number. Then at the top right of the double page spread is another number. Can you make out what they are? Also, the printed tag to the right of the double page spread is a code. And, does the handwritten parish at the top say Thixendale?

The problem I am having is that the MyHeritage search just doesnt work for very specific things. I'm physicaly looking through each page and I still can't find them. I hope that all makes sense.
