Ipswich Probate for Kent?
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 17:09 GMT (UK) »
I have a death in 2002 which had Probate dealt with by the Ipswich office. The lady I have was a long term Kent resident, where she died.

Is this unusual, please?

Thank you

Was the executor/one of the executors resident in Suffolk? If so, they'd have applied for probate at the Probate Registry nearest to where they lived.

No the administrator and the executor were both residents of Kent. The first was a solicitor and the second a relation.

Thx for your reply.

For a Kent resident they are usually done by Brighton and have been for many years. Seems very strange or may be I am just looking for a more interesting relation!

Thx

As far as I am aware they are done at the office that the person administrating the estate 'chose' for their convenience.  I don't think there are any rules that it has to be processed by any particular office.

Maybe some offices are busier than others and the records are passed elsewhere.  During the war the London wills were dealt with by Llandudno

Could be a red herring but I'm wondering if there was any substantial insurance issues (eg life insurance) related to the administration of the estate.  Many of the major insurance companies have their UK HQs in Ipswich, which means that some legal issues are transferred to the jurisdiction there, rather than being dealt with elsewhere.  I am reminded of this because of a legal issue which cropped up for my late husband some years ago.  We live in Wales so when it was decided to take matters to court, the papers were issued from the Ipswich Court to the defendant, because that's where our  insurance company and its lawyers were based.  This took us totally by surprise, and the defendant immediately capitulated, and accepted liability,  not wishing to travel across country from Wales to Suffolk for a court appearance.  For my husband and I, it was our home town, so it held no fears for us.
Suffolk: Pearl(e),  Garnham, Southgate, Blo(o)mfield,Grimwood/Grimwade,Josselyn/Gosling
Durham/Yorkshire: Sedgwick/Sidgwick, Shadforth
Ireland: Davis
Norway: Torreson/Torsen/Torrison

My lady wasn't issued with her Probate for over a year. I think she didn't have any close relations. Thank you I will check this. Very helpful thx.
